GIOVANNI BOLDINI. The creative process: Scientific Investigations and Conservation
Giovanni Boldini's secret, a bewitching alchemy of instinct and reasoning, classicism and modernity, modesty and audacity, of high-finish and the unfinished. In this volume, the boundless talent of the Italian master of the Belle Époque is investigated by two of the foremost experts of the study of painting materials and techniques, who open up an entirely new perspective thanks to the systematic study of dozens of works from various collections and periods. Combining scientific methods of analysis, the history of art and that of artistic techniques, we are brought to understand how Boldini observed, and how he composed.
The volume is constructed around two main essays that extrapolate specific reading paths from the extensive database collected, and in the second part focuses on a number of key works among those examined. An essay on the restoration of some of Boldini's paintings by Francesca Lo Russo and Arianna Splendore completes the volume, which is presented by Francesca Dini, one of the greatest specialists on the work of the painter, and co-author of the catalogue raisonné.
