THE MACCHIAIOLI

Palazzo Blu, Pisa
"The macchia is the solidity of bodies facing light" - Giovanni Fattori
The exhibition "THE MACCHIAIOLI", in Palazzo Blu, Pisa (from October 8th, 2022 to February 26th, 2023) is produced and organized by Fondazione Palazzo Blu and MondoMostre, with the contribution of Fondazione Pisa. Curated by art historian Francesca Dini, one of the most distinguished experts on the movement, the exhibition retraces the enthusiastic evolution and, at the same time revolution, of the Macchiaioli, one of the most original European avant-gardes of the second half of the XIX century.
The exhibit presents over 120 masterpieces coming from private collections, usually unaccessible to the public, and from important institutions such as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the National Museum of Science and Technology "Leonardo da Vinci" in Milan, the Modern Art Gallery - Musei di Genova Nervi and the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery in Rome. The exhibition catalogue is edited by Skira Editore.
The exhibition at Palazzo Blu, divided in 11 sections, follows the exciting adventure of a group of young, Tuscan and non-Tuscan, progressive painters who - willing to take distance from the Academic institution in which they studied under the influence of important masters of Romanticism like Giuseppe Bezzuoli and Francesco Hayez - end up writing one of the most poetic and daring pages of (not exclusively Italian) art history.
