Souls and Faces of Nineteenth Century Painting, From Hayez to Boldini

Palazzo Martinengo, Brescia
One hundred great works to celebrate a century of Italian art.
The major exponents of Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Scapigliatura and Divisionism tell the story of the multiform Italian artistic period of the 19th century. From Canova to Hayez, Fattori to Segantini, Inganni to De Nittis, Appiani to Boldini, these are some of the nineteenth century protagonists of Souls and Faces of Nineteenth Century Painting at Palazzo Martinengo in Brescia, from January 21 to June 11, 2017.
The exhibition, curated by Davide Dotti, illustrates the currents and pictorial movements that flourished, making the national creative scene one of the most dynamic in Europe. The show will open with Amore e Psiche (Cupid and Psyche), a masterpiece by Antonio Canova, that embodies the canons of neoclassical aesthetics. Hanging on the walls around the sculpture visitors will see some of the most representative paintings of neoclassical authors, including Andrea Appiani, Napoleon's favorite painter, who was able to evoke the sublime grace of Raphael.
